5 Simple Ways to Stop Global Warming

By on November 6, 2012

Global Warming is the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and the water bodies such as lakes, seas and oceans. This increase in the average temperature of the Earth is generally attributed to the Green House effect – the warming of the atmosphere due to the presence of certain gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, and fluorinated gases. These gases typically let the sunlight come in but they don’t let the heat go back into the space resulting in the increase in the Earth’s temperature. Even though this is a global issue, a few simple changes in our daily activities can bring positive changes and help in finding better ways to stop global warming.

The Earth’s climate is being fluctuated over millions of years but the changes are even more rapid for the past few decades resulting in the increasing temperatures. According to the statistics, the temperature has risen unusually about 1.2 to 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit in the last century. Human activities are the main reason in the increase in global temperatures and we need to make huge changes in our daily actions to reduce global warming. Here are 5 simple ways to consider that will help us in reducing the drastic effects of global warming.

1.   Reduce Solid Waste

Solid waste is any discarded solid material ranging from common waste that you find in your trash can to waste scrap metal, waste tires, and discarded appliances and vehicles waste. In addition, the vehicles that transport this solid waste to different facilities for incineration or for burial use fuels that in turn emit more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Furthermore the burning of this waste releases more carbon dioxide and when decomposed, they create methane. The best option to reduce the solid waste is to repair and reuse the items for a different purpose. If still the material is not of any use to you, consider recycling or donating it.

2. Usage of Lights

Electricity usage is one of the most important things to consider if you are looking for ways to stop global warming. Energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) can be used instead of incandescent light bulbs as the CFL’s reduce the usage of electricity significantly. A recent study revealed that if each and every home in the U.S. replaced at least five bulbs with CFL’s the green house gas reduction would be equal to removing 10 million cars from the roads. Now, isn’t this something that is in your bounds?

3. Plant More Trees

We all know that plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. And in that they are capable of stopping or at least slowing down the process of global warming. Planting trees, even in your backyard for that matter, can have a positive impact on climate change.

4. Conserve Water

Water is undoubtedly nature’s most important gift to the mankind and you can’t imagine your life running peacefully without its presence. Water scarcity not only affects humans, but also has severe influence on all the living things. Purifying and distributing this important resource uses a large amount of energy, especially when it comes to large cities that consume huge amount of water. Reducing the usage of water helps in reducing the usage of electricity which in turn helps in reducing the global warming.

5. Reduce the Usage of Fossil Fuels

Burning of the fossil fuels such as coal increases the levels of green house gases that are released in the atmosphere. Using alternative means of energy such as Solar Power or Wind Power will have a significant positive impact on the overall environment.

Other than these simple tips, there are many solutions and ways to stop global warming such as using energy efficient appliances and using public transportation. Whatever maybe the causes of global warming, the effects are indeed frightening and it is our responsibility to save the Earth from these venomous effects of global warming.
