What are the different types of green energy?

The energy generated from most of the dominantly used fuels today is pollutant to the ecology of Earth. Researchers have found other sources of energy that do not harm the environment and are termed as Green or Renewable energy. Some of the known types of green energy systems are as mentioned under.

  • Hydropower – The use of the kinetic energy of flowing or falling water for generation of energy is termed as Hydropower. The energy of moving water has been used to run various mills sinceages. The latest advancement is the production of electricity by erection of dams on rivers.   • Solar Power – The use of sun’s energy to heat water or oil into steam, which can power turbines, is termed Solar-Thermal energy. The more advanced method involves photovoltaic cells that can transform sun’s energy into electricity, which is then modulated for commercial consumption. Batteries are used in both the technologies for storage of electricity o that it can be used during nights or during cloudy weather as well as on emergency. Production of solar power emits maximum of 32 g/KWh, which is 40 times smaller than greenhouse gas emitted by coal-fired plant.
  • Wind Power– Moving air possess kinetic energy, which when into consumable energy is called WindPower. It is among the earliest power generation innovations and has long been used to run mills. Today, tall towers are erected with vertical fan-like blades that can drive turbines to generate electricity. Wind turbines do not emit greenhouse gas at all nor do they run on any fuel.
  • Geo-Thermal Power – The power generated from hot water and steam that are under the Earth’s surface is termed Geo-Thermal power. Temperatures beneath the Earth surface increase with depth that heats water or transforms it into steam. Power plants extract or release this geo-thermal energy to run turbines and produce electricity. On average, Geo-Thermal power plants emit 400kg of greenhouse gas per MWh, which is only a fraction of emissions from fossil fuel power plants.
  • Biomass Power –The electricity generated from organic components is termed can be called Biomass power. The gases released during decomposition of plants and animals is captured and converted into electricity. Methods like landfill are employed to assist proper decomposition as well as diminish wastage of biomass energy. Conflicts apart, biomass fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emission up to 90% of fossil fuels and cost 20%-70% lesser than conventional fuels.
