Movement Ecology – A New Dimensions in Science

It has been an object of the study for the researchers to find out the explanation behind the migratory activities of various species, especially that of birds to other regions. In the zeal for finding the reasons for migration, the researchers all over the world have also charted out maps containing the routes and the details of dispersal of these creatures.

Ecology movement is an entirely new discipline that studies the reasons for migration or the mobile behaviour of various birds, animals, microbes and also the seeds of some of the plants. The distance of the migrating destination may differ between species, ranging between a few centimetres to continents. The dispersal of the seeds and migration of various birds are explained by the wind and the climate. There is something common in reaction of the birds to the wind and that of the flowers to the same.

Creatures that the biologists find hard to find are either thought as being dormant or are thought of as having declined. However, movement ecology is of a different view. It emphasizes on the possibility of migration to have taken place. There are several kinds of migrations that take place across various species on the earth.

Modern technology is playing quite a crucial role for this discipline of ecology to appear on the surface. Science has gone far to determine the place where a bird has been. Analysis of the stable isotopes of the common elements help in finding out the last place the bird has been since its last moult. This is because these isotopes get into their food chain and they show up as chemical-geographical signatures on the wings of the creatures. The genetic history also has a role to play in the dispersal of various species. The reception of movement ecology by a number of researchers from other fields and studies who are participating and contributing here reflects the nature and importance of the issue. The movement ecologists have also studied the behaviour of locusts, that move first in a swarm and then in a highly ordered state.

The researchers in the field have carried out experiments on various birds and have followed them closely. The observations have revealed that almost all the birds or insects involve in the activities of migration due to the change in wind. And this in part is reminiscent of the dispersal of the seeds of a plant in the direction of the wind. This is again indicative of a possible vulnerability both on part of the insects and birds due to which they migrate. The common factor between the two species, issues from a certain lack of control in being drift in the direction of the wind.

Whatever it is, there are some common principles that govern the migratory and dispersing movements of the various species and this is what movement ecology stresses on.
